Sexually transmitted diseases are a group of diseases whose incidence is increasing in our society, usually transmitted by sexual intercourse and sometimes by other means (sperm, blood, vaginal discharge). Such diseases can sometimes be transmitted from mother to baby during pregnancy or childbirth. They can also be transmitted through blood products or needle sticks.

  • Discharge from the penis or vagina,

Symptoms may appear a few days after sexual intercourse, sometimes even 3 months later.

What are the Causes of These Diseases?

Such diseases can be caused by bacteria (gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydial infections), parasites (trichomoniasis) and viruses (HPV-human papilloma virus, HSV-herpes virus, HIV-human immunodeficiency virus).

What are the Risk Factors?

The following conditions are accepted as risk factors for sexually transmitted diseases;

  • Having unprotected sexual intercourse,
  • Having sexual intercourse with multiple sexual partners,
  • Having one or more sexually transmitted diseases,
  • Being addicted to alcohol and/or drugs.

What is the Importance of These Diseases?

These diseases affect the spouse and/or partner as well as the person himself/herself. It can also cause various complications if left untreated. For this reason, in the presence of such a disease, the person should consult a dermatologist as soon as possible with his/her partner.

How is the diagnosis made?

Patients with signs of a sexually transmitted disease can be diagnosed with some laboratory examinations (examination of blood, urine and/or discharge samples).

How are the treatments done?

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can be treated with appropriate drugs (antibiotic, antiviral, antiparasitic) for the causative agents.

What Should I Pay Attention To About This Issue?

Sexually transmitted diseases are diseases that are at risk of transmitting the disease to other people. These diseases to be heard by others in the society will also isolate the person socially. However, in the presence of such diseases, a dermatologist should be consulted as soon as possible and treatment should be planned.
