Skin Blemishes

Skin blemishes are a person’s one of the worst nightmares. Different types of blemishes can occur for various reasons, especially on our face. Skin blemishes are caused by the production of more than normal melanin pigment, which gives the skin its color. The most important trigger of skin discolouration is sun rays. Except this; Genetic predisposition, hormonal reasons such as pregnancy period, drug use (such as birth control pills) and diseases that cause inflammation on the skin are the main causes of skin blemishes.

Spot types can be grouped as melasma (pregnancy mask), freckles, solar lentigo (age spots), congenital spots and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (spots formed as a result of inflammation on the skin).

The patient with a blemish condition should first be examined by a dermatologist. The patient’s age, gender, presence of any concomitant disease or drug use are questioned. The stained area is first examined in daylight. Afterwards, an examination is performed under a blue wavelength ultraviolet light, which is called “Wood’s Lamp”, in order to evaluate the depth of the stain more clearly.

Skin Blemishes treatment varies according to the type and depth of the discolouration. The first step of Skin Blemishes treatment is to effectively protect yourself from the sun. Exposure to direct sunlight at noon should be avoided and sunscreen creams should be used regularly. Sunscreens should be applied half an hour before going out and should be renewed every 2-4 hours if exposure continues. Sunscreen should be reapplied after swimming and drying off. Sunglasses and a hat should also be used.

In the treatment of Skin Blemishes; skin lightening creams (dark spot correctors), chemical peeling, enzymatic peeling, lasers, and mesotherapy are used effectively. It is more appropriate to do the Skin Blemishes treatment in the winter when the harmful effects of the sun are not present.

In some patients, blemishes may recur after an effective treatment. For this reason, even if the Skin Blemishes treatment is completed, effective protection from the sun’s rays should be continued.
